Description
In this session, trainees will explore the profound impact that trauma can have on young people’s emotional, social, behavioral, and developmental wellbeing. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how traumatic experiences can influence the way young people think, feel, communicate, and respond to the world around them. The session will also provide practical, trauma-informed strategies that can be implemented to promote emotional regulation, foster a sense of physical and psychological safety, uphold dignity and respect, and strengthen supportive communication. Through discussion, reflection, and applied learning, trainees will develop the knowledge and confidence needed to create more compassionate, responsive, and empowering environments for young people affected by trauma.
Objectives
Participants will:
Describe the impact of trauma on developing brain and behavior and recognize how trauma manifests in social, emotional, and academic functioning.
Identify and apply key trauma-informed care principles and strategies that promote safety, trust, empowerment, and cultural responsiveness in school and social service settings.
Demonstrate at least two developmentally appropriate emotional regulation and de-escalation tools that support resilience and reduce distress in children and adolescents.
