Navigating Discord is an interactive training focused on recognizing, understanding, and effectively managing conflict in professional or personal interactions. Participants explore common communication barriers, emotional reactions, and behaviors that can escalate tension, while learning practical strategies to promote respectful dialogue, collaboration, and problem-solving. Through real world scenarios and guided discussion, this course helps individuals develop skills in conflict de-escalation, constructive communication, and maintaining productive relationships during difficult conversations and workplace disagreements.

Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify key Motivational Interviewing tenets and relational principles related to discord in helping relationships.

Recognize common contributors to discord, including the Four Horsemen (Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling) and common professional traps such as the Assessment/Q&A Trap, Expert Trap, Labeling, Premature Focus, Blaming, and Chat Trap.

Distinguish between behaviors that increase discord (e.g., arguing, interrupting, negating, ignoring) and those that decrease it (e.g., reflective listening and supportive responses).

Implement practical discord management skills to de-escalate tension, respond effectively to client resistance, and restore collaboration in real-time interactions.

Apply self-awareness strategies to monitor and manage their own contributions to discord while fostering stronger, more resilient client relationships.
